In Greek mythology, Apollo loved the beautiful Spartan youth Hyacinthus. As the two trained together, throwing the discus, they were watched by Zephyrus, the West Wind, who was also enamoured with Hyacinthus. Consumed by jealousy, Zephyrus deflected one of Apollo’s throws, causing the discus to strike Hyacinthus and mortally wound him. Grief-stricken, Apollo could not save his beloved, but from the blood that fell to the ground he created the hyacinth flower, marking it as a symbol of sorrow and enduring love.
